Learn the Facts: What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the surrounding skin of the labia or lips of the vagina. It is performed to alter the size and shape of the labia or to correct loose or sagging tissue in this area. The procedure is conducted to improve the function and appearance of a woman’s genitalia.
Ideal Candidates: Is the Procedure Right For You?
Does loose or sagging tissue cause you to experience pain, irritation, or discomfort during physical activities such as bike riding or sexual intercourse? Do you find that urination is uncomfortable due to loose tissue surrounding the inner or outer vaginal lips? If so, you may be a candidate for the labiaplasty procedure. Also, if you suffer from frequent urinary tract infections, yeast infections, or sexual dysfunction attributed to this issue, labiaplasty may provide a solution. For improved comfort and appearance, ask your doctor or plastic surgeon if labiaplasty is the right choice for you.
Your Labiaplasty Consultation
During your consultation with your surgeon, expect to be asked about your medical history, any existing conditions, and current medications you are taking. It is important to discuss your expected outcome with your surgeon during this time. You will also undergo a physical examination so your doctor can create the best approach for your surgery.
The Procedure
The surgery begins with the administration of anesthesia. Your surgeon will either use general or local anesthesia depending on his assessment.
There are several techniques used to achieve the desired outcome, such as the trim and wedge procedures. A portion of the outer edges of the labia may be trimmed to remove the excess skin, or a pie-shaped segment (wedge) may be taken out to reshape the genital region while preserving the edges. The whole surgical procedure usually takes about an hour.
The Recovery Process
During the first several days you will be advised to avoid any strenuous activity. The recovery process should take from a week to 10 days. After this time, and following the “okay” from your surgeon, you should be able to resume moderate exercise. There may be some discoloration surrounding the surgical site, as well as mild swelling. Pain should be minimal. However, you may be prescribed pain medication that you should take as directed. Feminine pads may be worn to absorb post-operative drainage. If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as bleeding, excessive pain, or abnormal swelling, contact your surgeon.
Cost of Labiaplasty
The total cost of a vaginal surgery procedure will vary on a patient-to-patient basis. The overall price may include clinic rates, doctor’s fees, and other miscellaneous fees.
